A man says he has solved a “real problem” for other men who like beer – by inventing a clip to keep their beard and moustache dry.

The stainless steel contraption, known as ‘The Bush Ranger’ sits on top of the drinker’s glass.

It has four copper pins to hold it in place – two on the inside and two on the outside.

Inventor of the contraption, Tim Murphy, said he came up with the idea for the £17 gadget after noticing mugs with “built-in moustache guards”.

“I thought, ‘Why not make something that can work on any glass?’,” he told What’s The Jam.

“Those mugs had built-in moustache guards but they were fixed to one cup.

“The idea really hit me one day at my local brewery.

“I used to take a bamboo straw with me – but let’s be honest, drinking beer through a straw isn’t ideal.

“Without it, you’d end up with a soggy mo and even spitting a bit when talking.

“Not a great look!

“It [my product] is designed to stop your drink from soaking your moustache while you enjoy a pint — or any other beverage.”

It’s taken Tim a year to get the design right.

He said: “I started with cardboard cutouts and worked through several prototypes.

“Getting the shape right was key – it had to fit a range of drinkware, not just pint glasses.

“I honestly believe it solves a real problem.

“I use mine everywhere I go.

“I keep one in each of our cars and even one in the missus’s handbag – just in case I forget mine at home!”

Tim, who hails from Australia, says the reaction from his family, friends and customers has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

He said: “I’ve had customers at market events come back to say how well it works and some even buy extras as gifts.

“It’s always great hearing that kind of feedback.

“I use mine down at the pub every time I go.

People are always curious, and the response has been great.

“Lots of laughs, but also a lot of people saying, ‘That actually makes sense’.”

Tim is working on new ideas for other beard-related products but wants to focus his time on his existing gadget for now.

He said: “ I want to give it the proper time and attention before expanding.

“If a celebrity could endorse it, it’d definitely be [actor] Travis Fimmel.

“He’s Aussie, has a great beard, and makes his own beer – what more could you want?”

The Bush Ranger is currently only sold online on Tim’s website but he hopes to bring it to the UK for sale in stores in the future.

He added: “I reckon it could become a pub essential in the UK.

“I’ve been there once and visited some proper old pubs — like the Woodcutters Arms in Stroud.

“This would fit right in.”
