An artist has revealed how she’s recycling unsold bread and turning it in to lamps – that never go mouldy.

When Yukiko Morita started working part-time at a bakery, she quickly noticed how much bread would often be thrown away at the end of the day.

Unhappy with the amount, the 38-year-old decided to make use of the stale food and took it home for herself, before having a lightbulb moment of creativity.

Now, she turns unsold loafs into working lamps – and claims they never go mouldy.

“The bread is covered with the special anti-mould coating that I have developed over nearly 10 years,” Yukiko, an artist, told What’sTheJam.com.

“So, you don’t have to worry about them going bad.

“[At first], I would eat it myself and decorate my room with it like flowers or give it to friends.

“This modest attempt at daily resistance had been changed when I saw that a piece of bread was illuminated by light [through the] inside of the bread that I had hollowed out.

“For a brief, inexpressible moment, it was shining beautifully in the darkened room.

“This was the foundation for my work, and the point at which, as a creative, I knew what I wanted to do.”

Yukiko, from Kobe, Japan, now purchases unsold loaves from local bakeries and turns them into lamps, which she sells for up to £250.

She said: “At first, I purchase bread from the local bakery.

“Then, I scrape them out the inside of it and dry them perfectly.

“After that, I apply anti-mould treatment and set up the LED lights at last.”

After up to three weeks, the process is complete.

Yukiko also shares her art to his Instagram, (@pampshade_by_yukikomorita), which has over 26,500 followers.

In a recent post, she shared a clip of four baguettes which he had turned into lamps.

She tunes the lights to the sound of ‘Music for a Sushi Restaurant’ by Harry Styles, as the lamps flicker to the music.

The clip has so far gathered over 32,000 views, as well as comments from amazed users.
