Paul is a silicone overlay designed to represent patients with a higher body mass index.

Videos of them in action have become surprisingly popular.
One had nearly 650,000 hits and over 36,000 likes.
The dummies are used by Northumbria NHS at its simulation suite at Wansbeck General Hospital, Ashington, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Deepta Churm, director of simulation at Northumbria NHS trust, said: “We’re really pleased to see the strong engagement with our recent social media posts, featuring the manikins used in our simulation training suite at the Dinwoodie Assessment and Simulation Hub at Wansbeck General Hospital.
“The videos, filmed inside our simulation suite, give a behind-the-scenes look at how we train staff in a safe and immersive environment.”
Ms Churm added: “These advanced manikins can breathe, blink, speak, have pulses and their clinical observations will change depending on the given treatment, allowing staff to practise complex clinical scenarios in a controlled setting without any risk to patients.

“It’s great to see so much interest in the work that goes on behind the scenes to train and support our healthcare teams.”
But viewers were spooked by the videos.
Lewis Cutts said: “Kind of wish I hadn’t seen Viv and Paul just before bed to be honest.”

And someone else added: “Even with beer goggles Paul would be a solid, ‘no’.”
Another said: “I don’t think I like Paul, sorry Paul.”
