A pub has been slammed after banning sportswear ahead of the World Cup.

The Station introduced a smart/casual only dress code, meaning no entry for anyone wearing sportswear, hats or hoodies.

It also has new closing arrangements, with last entry set for 11pm and the venue closing at 1am.

The changes will apply on Fridays and Saturdays after 9pm.

A spokesperson for the pub in Sutton Coldfield, West Mids, said: “As a few of you are already aware, we’ve had a few changes to how we operate recently, and we just wanted to communicate them to everyone.

“Our dress code has updated.

“Smart/casual.

“No entry if in sportswear, hats or hoodies.

“Our final entry to the venue will be 11pm. Our venue will close at 1am.

“These changes all start this weekend and apply to Fridays and Saturdays after 9pm.”

The announcement quickly sparked debate with some questioning the timing as the World Cup looms.

Some regulars said it will drive customers away while others have welcomed the change.

Alex Field was dubious about the move.

He said: “There’s a World Cup around the corner and a Champions League Aston Villa season upcoming and they’re banning sportswear on Saturday, it’s baffling.

“I do believe customers will go elsewhere if they can’t wear England gear and shorts.

“I will continue to drink there but it may just be a move away from there before Villa fixtures on a Saturday as me and my friends like wearing our colours.

“So it’s more a feeling of disappointment than animosity toward the venue.”

Andrea ‘dre’ Pritchard added: “I can’t imagine this will drive footfall but hey ho, it’s their pub.”

And Lee Matthews said: “Oh dear, no entry wearing football shirts for the weekend World Cup games.

“This is a bad move.”

And Michael Browne added: “So, why are you showing football games but expecting fans to turn up, not in football shirts?

“A World Cup coming up, and you don’t want England or Scottish fans to turn up wearing their nation’s shirts?”

But another local, George Fredrick, was keen, adding: “Good, be a nice change.”
