Vintage sports items including a baseball jersey that belonged to legendary player Lou ‘Iron Horse’ Gehrig are hitting the auction block.

They form part of a collection by Christie’s dubbed ‘American Greats: Vintage Sports and Hollywood from the Dr. G.B. Espy Collection’.

The auction will feature an eclectic line of memorabilia covering the early 20th century.

The big ticket item is the aforementioned jersey worn by Gehrig in his final game.

It is estimated to fetch £1.4m-£2.9m ($2m-$4m), What’s The Jam reports.

Gehrig made a name for himself by playing with the New York Yankees during the early 20th century.

The sports star took part in 2,130 consecutive games, which earned him the nickname ‘Iron Horse’ for his incredible durability.

The batter retired in 1939 at age 36 due to an ALS diagnosis.

Other items on sale include Gehrig’s baseball bat, expected to sell for up to £740,764 ($1m) as well as an item belonging to another legendary player: Babe Ruth.
