An Italian football club is giving free £55.49 shirts to kids born in the city to guarantee fans for life.

Bologna FC 1909 recently announced that all children born in the city from January 2025 will be given a free home shirt.

Fans of Premier League clubs have pleaded for their teams to follow in the team’s footsteps.

The strips – which currently cost a whopping £55.49 – will be free of charge for the next generation of fans.

The initiative is a collaboration with the football club and the Municipality of Bologna with support from kit manufacturers Macron and sponsors Saputo, Selenella and Lavoropiù.

The announcement was made on 13 January, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Footy fans have applauded the decision and pleaded for UK clubs to follow suit.

Craig Johnston said: “What a shout for 1 club towns, imagine Aberdeen or Newcastle doing this.”

Brendan added: “Start them early.”

Paul Grainger joked: “I’d absolutely rage if someone put a Liverpool shirt on my baby in hospital.”

Another said: “Great idea.”

One other said: “My son used to cry every time I put him in a Southend United shirt.”

Claudio Fenucci, CEO of Bologna FC 1909 stated: “This initiative demonstrates the club’s intention to be ever closer to its supporters and the territory, establishing a bond of affection with its new fans from day one.”

Premier League stars such as Arsenal’s Ricardo Calafirori and Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee both represented Bologna before moving to England.
