A balding man who spent thousands trying to keep his hair says shaving his head is the best thing he’s done.
David Simmons said when he started to go thin on top it was a “crippling loss.”
The 38-year-old forked out thousands for hair-growth tablets, thickening shampoos and vitamins.

It was a desperate attempt to save his fading locks.
After searching for a partner on dating apps, he was convinced he wouldn’t find love without hair and decided to get a hair transplant
But at the last minute he changed his mind about the £3,500 op, even losing his £1,000 deposit.
And last month, David made the ‘terrifying’ decision to shave his hair off completely and says it saved his life.
David, who moved from Johannesburg, South Africa, to North London in 2022, says he has “renewed confidence” and is looking forward to getting back into dating once he’s used to his new look.

“I wish I’d shaved it off 10 years ago and hadn’t been so obsessed with it,” David told What’s The Jam.
He said: “I must have spent thousands on hair products. It went on for years. I could have funded a trip for two to Tuscany.
“Who was going to love me with no hair? I wasn’t receiving those exciting Tinder matches we all hope or long for. I had liked over 300 faces and not a single match.

“I came to the realisation that it was something I had to come to terms with.
“Shaving my hair off was terrifying, but it was the most liberating experience.
“I had no idea what the shape of my head was. I thought I had a big head but it’s quite small. It was white because it hadn’t been exposed to the sun for 38 years and my face was tanned so I had to get used to that. I didn’t recognise the person in the mirror.
“I felt a renewed confidence. I’m so glad I shaved it. It saved my life.
“If I’d had a hair transplant it would have made things worse. It wouldn’t have covered up my confidence issues. It wouldn’t have fixed me.
“I haven’t been back on the dating apps yet. I’m still trying to navigate my new look and get to know myself in the mirror.
“But I feel confident when I walk into a room, before there was a biting energy because I knew I had a bald patch at the back.
“Everything happens for a reason at the right time.”
David started noticing his hair was thinning when he was 28 and tried his best to cover it up.
He said: “Year after year it got worse. It’s a sore spot for so many people.
“I moved to London from South Africa in 2022 and everything in my life changed for the better apart from my hair.
“I carried a bottle of hairspray around with me and was conscious of the wind.
“The realisation of hair loss is a touchy subject. It was awful.”
David started researching hair transplants and in February this year chose a clinic before changing his mind.
He said: “I became obsessed with hair transplants – the benefits, pros, cons, surgery and the after-effects. Could I afford it? And did I really want to splash out thousands I didn’t have for a potential full head of hair?
“In hindsight, the deposit was money well spent. I will make the money back. I had to go through this process to have my lightbulb moment. It saved me from probably doing one of the worst things I could have potentially done to myself.”
