A Brit couple have spent a whopping £6,700 to build their own DIY pool in the garden of their home in the rainy UK.
Magenta and Zac Askew shocked friends and family when they decided to flip their backyard into a pool paradise.
The two 29-year-old’s did all of the work themselves, spending a torrid eight months making their dream a reality.
From digging up their garden in -10 degrees to getting covered in concrete in the dark, the married couple’s build was a testing one.
“I have respect for construction workers that do this on the daily,” Magenta, from Essex, told What’s The Jam.
“We enjoy a challenge when it comes to DIY, so this in itself tempted us when initially joking about the idea of building our own pool.
“We would always see amazing properties on social media that had pools and thought, ‘Why couldn’t we do this ourselves?’
“We spend a lot of time outside in the warmer months and really wanted to make it a space we felt like we never had to leave.”
The DIY swimming pool project at their home in Stowmarket, Suffolk, started in August last year.
Fortunately, costs were kept down after they discovered through the council that the build was within the “permitted development” of their property.
The retail assistant and HGV driver then set about turning their green space into a 4x3m wide and 1x3m deep heated plunge pool.
The build got off to a poor start after the pair realised the amount of manual labour needed for the job.
Magenta said: “We had a slight panic at first.
“Our narrow path between our house and garage meant we could only fit a mini digger down there.
“It also meant we couldn’t fit a dumper down and wheelbarrowed a lot of the soil and stone.
“Zac nearly fell in with a wheelbarrow of concrete when filling the walls, he saved himself but I took the full blow and got covered in concrete while standing in the pool below him.
“It was the middle of winter and we were near the end but it had got dark and we were doing it with head torches on – so I guess that’s what happens when you work in the dark.”
Posting their build online, the clip racked up a whopping 526,600 views and over 41,200 likes.
Magenta and Zac’s neighbours, friends and family were all intrigued by the build – with plenty buzzing for the pool parties this summer.
The couple have confirmed it will be closed during the winter months and luckily will be heated.
Magenta said: “They thought it was a big challenge, I don’t think anyone really quite knew the full extent of the build and maybe assumed we were putting a paddling pool in the ground.
“But they love it and can’t wait for the pool party.”
