A zoo has captured the incredible moment a baby elephant was born.

The first-time mum, Amahle, was supported by another fellow mum, Nolwazi, and her calf.

As African elephants are pregnant for an average of 22 months, its arrival had been eagerly awaited.

Amahle is shown walking around her enclosure, before lowering her back legs and stomach.

A male calf pops out and she delicately cleans him.

The newborn mum then nudges him to get up – and soon enough, he is on his four legs, following her around.

The video racked up over 156,000 views and 4,000 likes.

According to the zoo, both mum and baby are doing well, but will continue to be monitored around-the-clock by their veterinary team.

A vet explains how the calf is small and had to have some help latching onto his mum for milk – but is otherwise doing well.

“We know you’ve all been wondering how our baby elephant is doing,” The Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s vet said.

“After his birth, our animal care teams noticed he was struggling to reach Nolwazi to nurse.

“The teams quickly worked to find a solution that would help him feed to get the nutrition he needs, and are seeing great progress.”
