A young pilot has revealed the emotional moment she finally flew her terrified mum for the first time – after years of fear, hesitation and a heartbreaking regret involving a late friend.
Sophia Gehlhar, 27, took to the skies with her mum Stephanie, 55, in a flight she says meant far more than simply “conquering a fear”.
The heartwarming experience has since gone viral online after Sophia shared a clip of the pair flying together, with viewers praising the emotional family milestone.

Sophia, who has been a pilot for around three years, said aviation was never something she imagined for herself growing up, as reported by Whats The Jam.
“I originally went to college for nursing, but I knew deep down it wasn’t the life I was meant for,” she said.
“It wasn’t until a friend asked me ‘why not fly the airplane?’ that something clicked.

“No one had ever told me I could be a pilot before that.”
She now describes flying as “the most challenging and rewarding thing” she has ever done, adding that it gave her “a version of myself I never knew existed”.

But while Sophia built a life in the skies, her mum Stephanie spent years battling a severe fear of heights and flying.
Sophia said: “She can’t even watch videos of people high up without feeling sick.
“She always says it’s not that she’s afraid of me flying – she’s afraid of the airplane itself.”

Despite her fear, Stephanie eventually agreed to join her daughter in the cockpit – something Sophia insists she never pressured her into doing.
She said: “I always knew how real her fear was, so I never wanted to pressure her.

“But I think she realised this wasn’t just a flight – it was something we’d remember forever.”
Before take-off, Stephanie made one request – no “pilot tricks” and only smooth flying.
Once airborne, she admitted she was stunned by how calm the experience felt.
Sophia said: “She actually loved take-off because she barely felt it.
“But every small movement after that got an ‘oh my god’ reaction.”
At one point, Sophia even let her mum place her hands on the controls.
She said: “She very cautiously held it for a few seconds and then said that was enough.”
The most emotional moment, however, came during the landing.
Sophia said: “She asked me if it was the hardest part and I told her it was the most fun.
“I looked over at her and realised she was trusting me completely.
“It felt like everything I’d worked for had led to that moment.”
As the plane touched down, Stephanie burst into applause.
Sophia said: “She just started smiling and clapping for me.
“I think we were both overwhelmed – her from facing a fear, and me from finally sharing this with her.”
Back on the ground, Stephanie, from Minneapolis, US, appeared “giddy”, with her fear seemingly disappearing.

Sophia admitted she was stunned by the reaction online.
She said: “I don’t really post often. I just wanted to keep it as a memory.
“I was nervous about sharing it, but the response was overwhelmingly positive. Not a single negative comment.”
She added that the reaction changed how she views social media, calling it a reminder of “how powerful shared emotional moments can be”.
But the flight carried an even deeper meaning for Stephanie.
She later revealed she had once turned down a flight invitation from a close friend, Christine, who earned her pilot’s licence before later dying from breast cancer in her 30s.
Sophia added: “She told me she’s always regretted not getting on that plane with her.
“So choosing to fly with me meant saying yes this time – and not missing the moment again.”
Sophia’s video has now racked up 1.5 million views, more than 241,000 likes and 939 comments.
One person said: “It’s sweet because she probably clapped like that when you took your first steps and now she’s clapping for you landing a plane, how amazing & sweet.”

Another user added: “Arm around you? she had full faith in her baby that she would land that plane.”
One person said: “This is the flex you think it is.”
Another viewer commented: “You did that while not only looking like an absolute baddie, but you were also being blinded by the sun. That’s beyond impressive. I hope you know how awesome you are.”

One person added: “Look how confident her mom is in her. She didn’t flinch!!”
