An American woman living in the UK has revealed the “craziest” British custom she’s ever witnessed – and it’s left her totally baffled.
Ashley Jackson, who moved to Manchester from Texas in 2022, says she couldn’t believe her ears when she first heard about a “meat raffle”.
The 42-year-old content creator, who often shares UK vs US culture shocks, was stunned to learn punters can win cuts of raw meat in a pub giveaway.
The unusual tradition – often used for fundraising – sees people buy tickets for the chance to win steaks, sausages or roasting joints from local butchers.
In a viral clip with more than 51,000 views, Ashley admits she had never come across anything like it before.
“This is a unique British custom that I’ve never heard of until like two weeks ago when I was out with some girlfriends and they were telling me about this,” Ashley told What’s The Jam.
“I was absolutely just baffled by it really.
“That custom is a meat raffle.
“So a guy comes around and he’s raffling off meat and you get what you get.
“Tell me more please.”
She captioned the post: “So… you raffle meat? Where? When? And why?
“As an American, and specifically a Texan I cannot believe this isn’t a thing I’ve heard of.
“I have to note – as a primarily plant-based eater, I’m not seeking this out.
“Just so crazy in Texas we didn’t have anything like this.”
Viewers were quick to pile into the comments with their own takes.
One person said: “Next thing you’ll say you’ve never been in the pub when the fish man comes in selling mussels and crab sticks.”
Another person added: “Meat Bingo is elite tho.”
One viewer wrote: “We were in a ‘dive bar ‘ in Astoria, Oregon and they had a meat raffle- made me feel quite ‘at home’.”
Another person said: “My mum had a chest freezer full of meat.
“She was often bringing home legs of lamb and pork from the working men’s club after winning it – again.”
And one user added: “I’m learning about my own country!”
