A doctor has revealed the bizarre side effects that can happen to your skin if you don’t get enough sleep.

Mamina Turegano, a dermatologist, internist, and dermatopathologist, previously hit headlines for revealing that your iPhone could be giving you acne, and why it’s crucial to take care of your eyes in the winter.

Earning over 1.1m followers on TikTok (@dr .mamina), her most recent fact caused quite a stir, posting two videos that garnered over 28,000 views combined.

Dr Turegano revealed some bizarre side effects caused by not getting enough shut-eye.

“I’ve always had an interest in how our lifestyles, like our diet, sleep, and other environmental factors can play a role in our health,” the 40-year-old, from New Orleans, told What’s The Jam.

“When I went through medical school I developed an affinity towards patients with autoimmune skin issues during my rheumatology rotation.

“That’s when I decided that I was interested in pursuing dermatology.

“It encompasses a broad spectrum of medicine, including complex medicine, surgery, pathology, cosmetics, and treating both adults and paediatrics.

“I loved the variety of skin that we see in dermatology.”

Across two videos shared to TikTok, she revealed the side effects of not getting enough sleep.

In the first post, Mamina starts by saying: “So let’s discuss the importance of sleep for your skin and how you can maximise your nighttime routine for optimum skin health.

“So I want you to think about the last time you woke up after a bad night’s sleep, there’s an obvious difference you can see in the mirror right?”

She then goes on to say how your skin can seem to lose its lustre and resilience.

She adds: “So when we sleep our bodies don’t just lay there, they’re actually repairing and rebuilding.

“When your body is in deep sleep, cell turnover and collagen reduction is happening in your skin and your body is also cleaning out garbage and cellular waste so that you wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.”

In her second post, she reveals what little sleep can lead to.

She says: “When you’re sleeping your skin is balancing its moisture levels, essentially deciding what to let go of and what to hold on to.

“Without quality sleep, this can cause a dull complexion and more breakouts as your skin tries to compensate with greater oil production.

“Luckily your skin is incredibly responsive to the right amount of rest.

“Just as a few nights of poor sleep can have a negative impact, a consistent routine of deep peaceful sleep can actually strengthen your skin’s ability to heal.”

While everyone’s nighttime can vary, Mamina explains that anything less than six hours of sleep can affect your skin’s overall health, texture, and tone.

Over both videos, Dr Turegano has received over 1,000 likes, as well as tons of comments from thankful users.

Haley said: “As a single mom going through a divorce, I have the WORST breakouts of my life. But I’m also barely sleeping…thank you for the explanation.”
