A doctor who graduated from Harvard University went viral after issuing an urgent PSA about the effects “doom scrolling” has on our brains.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist, shares his experience and knowledge with his 499,000 followers on TikTok (@doctorsethimd ).

He recently revealed the shocking impact not brushing your teeth before bed has – not only for our mouths – but for our hearts, too.

Now, the 42-year-old has shared the effects of scrolling on our phones all day.

And it could be “ruining” our brains, reports What’s The Jam.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained doctor, warns that excessive phone use floods the brain with dopamine, disrupts social bonding hormones, and causes mental fatigue.

In a clip, which has racked up 29,000 views and hundreds of likes, he explains three points.

“Constant phone use floods your brain with dopamine, making it crave quick rewards,” the doctor, from California, US, says.

“This can make it harder to focus on tasks like reading or problem solving, which do not offer instant gratification.”

The second reason is that social media use disrupts oxytocin, the hormone related to feeling connected.

He continues: “Instead of boosting feelings of closeness, scrolling through perfect images of others’ lives can leave you feeling anxious and lonely.”

Dr Sethi’s final point is that overuse of screens leads to mental fatigue.

He adds: “The constant dopamine rush wears your brain out.

“To reset, engage in offline activities like exercise or spending time with friends.

“And to feel more focused and less stressed.”

Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions.

“Very hard to focus on this video, I literally swiped,” one user said, followed by three laughing emojis.

Mike commented: “That’s how I found you, and I like your advice.”

“Makes a video on a scrolling platform,” another user said, to which Dr Sethi replied: “Touché.”
