Archaeologists believe they have found an ancient hard-boiled egg in a five-year-old boy’s grave.

Researchers have been left baffled by the mysterious find, What’s The Jam reports.

The egg, which is believed to be from a chicken, measured 5cm and was found alongside weapons and belts from the seventh century – meaning the site could be 1,300 years old.

According to the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BflD), the remains were spotted during an excavation in the Erding district.

It’s reported that only a few children’s graves with this type of funeral offering are located in Bavaria.

The earliest evidence of this comes from Italian graves, dating back to the fifth century, where artificial eggs were also given made from clay and bronze.

“It is still unclear which custom underlies our Bavarian chicken egg,” Dr Jochen Haberstoh, an archaeologist for the BlfD, said.

“What is certain is that egg had a special symbolic meaning for the relatives of the deceased.

“The location of the ice in the stomach area could indicate an addition to food.

Depending on culture, eggs have different meanings, such as rebirth and resurrection in Christianity.

The rare gravesite was first excavated in 2014 – 10 years on, there is still no information surrounding the boy’s fate.

Currently, the skeletal remains and egg are preserved, and are being researched along with other graves nearby.
