You could own a piece of history and live in the home of the cartoonist Sir Quentin Blake – with his medieval former home being listed for just under £1 million.

Famous for his work as a children’s illustrator, writer and caricaturist, Sir Blake has illustrated over 300 books, including 18 of the written works of Roald Dahl.

Bought by the artist in 1972, the Grade II listed home was constructed as a Wealden Hall in the mid-15th century.

Alterations were later made to the five-bedroom Hastings-based home in the 1600s, with a staircase, fireplace, plasterwork and a kitchen renovation being added in the 1920s.

Quentin sold the two-bathroom house in 2022, and the property is now back on the market for a new owner to continue its more than 600 years of history.

The listing reads: “What this extraordinary home has, and which can’t be measured in terms of value is the history and provenance of a building which has stood for nearly 600 years and has seen a litany of personal stories, historical upheavals and unfathomable changes in taste and domestic evolution.

“The original house would have stood in significant grounds and have been regarded as a grand property.

“Irresistibly, this house was once called Merry Christmas Beer House and in the early to mid-19th century offered accommodation for travellers.”

Decorated in an Elizabethan pattern, the house has been carefully preserved to maintain its original beauty.

Entering into the main living room, you then step up into the sitting area that contains a fireplace, perfect for staying cosy and warm.

Walking through the hall there is also a utility room with a washing machine and loo, as well as access to the gardens.

There is also a study area with a working fireplace.

The kitchen contains a functioning AGA as well as easy access to the stunning garden.

With a small terrace area, perfect for a morning cup of tea, the gardens are also perfect for any budding green thumbs.

The first floor contains one bedroom, a bathroom, and an airing cupboard and was formally used by Quentin as his painting studio.

Travelling up to the second floor a spacious bathroom holds a large shower, bath and toilet, before entering it into additional bedrooms with dressing areas.

The property – which features on What’s The Jam – is currently for sale for £950,000 with Unique Property Company.
