A woman who swapped her expensive flat for a static caravan says she now saves around £1,000 a month on her bills.

Katrina ditched renting due to “constant financial pressure” and says opting for a caravan “made sense” to her.

The 31-year-old business owner bought her static caravan for £26,000, a move she says allowed her to “live more intentionally and enjoy life”.

“I wanted more disposable income and the ability to work less,” Katrina, who lives in the south of England, told What’s The Jam.

“I think many of us have been conditioned to work long hours just to afford a house or flat.

“I didn’t want to wait until retirement to enjoy life – I wanted more free time and more balance.

“A caravan made sense because the running costs are much lower, which means I can work around half the hours I used to and actually enjoy my life now.”

Since buying her caravan in March 2025, Katrina estimates she has saved around £8,890 on her bills in total or around £800 to £1,000 per month.

Katrina also shared some of her favourite things about living in her static caravan.

She added: “Having a space to call my own without the constant financial pressure.

“Having more time to enjoy the nature around me, and the freedom, financially and mentally, to travel and see the world.

“I also love the community feel of living on a park, as well as the facilities.

“I’ve been swimming in the on-site pool six days a week.”

However, she’s also faced some challenges along the way – including installing a washing machine outside.

Katrina says she taught herself basic plumbing from YouTube in order to get the job done.

She emphasised that none of the challenges she’s faced put her off setting up her new life.

She added: “For me, this choice wasn’t about giving something up, it was about gaining time, freedom, and peace of mind.

“It’s allowed me to live more intentionally and enjoy life now, rather than constantly feeling like I’m working towards a future that never quite arrives.”

For others considering a similar move, Katrina advised that research is “absolutely key”.

Katrina noted: “Finding the right park with low running costs and reasonable rules makes all the difference.

“It’s also really important to ask how prices increase over time and to request a forecast for the next five years to make sure it stays affordable long-term.

“If you have your own land for a static caravan then that is ideal, but if you are looking for a park, look for residential if you want to stay all year round and I really advocate for small family-run parks.
