A woman is making more than £700 a month with a quirky side hustle – flipping furniture she finds on the streets.

Kelly Oakey upcycles the unwanted or scrap items into impressive furniture, which she then sells on for a profit.

The 34-year-old has been doing it for over a decade when she was furnishing her own home on a budget, and found items for cheap online or even left on pavements, which she then upcycled to make her own.

And it’s proven to be a lucrative hobby, too.

“I got into furniture flipping about 12 years ago when I’d just moved in with my now-husband,” Kelly told What’s The Jam.

“I wanted to decorate our home on a budget and discovered furniture flipping.

“I fell in love with the feeling of transforming dated furniture into stylish statement pieces and reducing waste to landfill.

“Soon enough, I was doing pieces for friends and family, and eventually it turned into an exciting business.”

Kelly revealed that her curbside furniture flipping, separate to the rest of her furniture business, brings in upwards of $1,500 (AUD) (£745) a month.

Sharing her secrets, she said the best places to find discarded furniture to flip are via Facebook Marketplace, recycle centres, friends and family, and spotting them as pavement pickups.

Kelly, who lives on the Gold Coast in Queensland, said: “Sometimes I’ll find pieces for free, or family and friends will offer me items for free if I can go and take it off their hands.

“I spend anywhere from $20 to $80 on furniture to flip, sometimes it’s worth paying a little more for quality pieces.”
