An elephant orphanage’s Land Rovers have been converted into electric vehicles so they don’t get stranded.

Sarara’s fleet of diesel 4x4s used to be out of action during the muddy, rainy seasons.

They were hampered by deliveries of diesel grinding to a halt when roads became too difficult to drive on.

They are used to deliver supplies and transport visitors across the 850,000 acre site – the size of over 600,000 football pitches.

But now its Land Rover Defenders have been turned into EV and are solar powered.

Technology company Electrogenic, based in Oxford, has electrified the vehicles.

Sarara – also an eco-Safari Lodge – is located in Kenya, north of Nairobi.

It has helped save 6,000 elephants, as reported on Whats The Jam.

An Electrogenic spokesperson said: “Sarara’s long-serving Land Rovers have been upcycled.

“Converted to electric drive in its on-site workshops, and given a new lease of life

“The diesel 4x4s have long been critical to the running of the camp, ferrying guests and supplies around the sprawling 850,000 acre conservancy.

“The newly-electrified, zero-tailpipe emission Defenders are easier to drive, more reliable and better off-road, whisper-quiet, they also enable guests to get closer to animals than ever before.

“The 4x4s can be charged using the camp’s solar panels, reducing its carbon-footprint, and helping it move off-grid.

“It demonstrates game-changing flexibility offered by electric-drive.

“The camp is no longer reliant on deliveries of diesel, which could not reach them during the muddy rainy season, bringing the operation to a halt.

“Thanks to the EV converted 4x4s, they can now keep operations running year round.

“Sarara’s on-site technicians will now act as an approved installer for Electrogenic’s kits, helping businesses in Kenya and beyond also make the switch to electric.

Steve Drummond, CEO Electrogenic, said: “The electrification of the Sarara Land Rover Defender fleet has been a truly rewarding project for all of us at Electrogenic.

“It’s exciting to move into the African market for the first time.

“We’re delighted to now have vehicles powered by Electrogenic driving around on four continents, this is a significant moment for us.

“Since helping the mechanics at Sarara convert the Land Rovers we’re delighted to report the electrified 4x4s have already proven their worth.

“They were up and running in time for the region’s rainy season – when the roads become treacherous, preventing deliveries of fuel reaching remote spots.”

Electrogenic is famous for numerous bespoke EV conversions like Hollywood star Jason Momoa £215,000 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II.

It also turned TV funnyman Jimmy Carr’s vintage Aston Martin DB6 – worth £250,000.
