If you like cold bath plunges but fancy a challenge this winter, there’s a new extreme sport to try: ice floating.

Social media users are raving over the “sick” activity – which sees people dressing up as “pizza pockets for polar bears” in thick red suits – before hopping into Arctic waters.

Terrifying – or mesmerising, depending on how you see it – videos show as humans play, jump and float around in ice pockets.

The clips have over hundreds of thousands of likes.

One particularly shocking moment shows two people lying on a sliver of ice, holding hands, as it suddenly starts to move with the water.

Photos show them another pair casually lying on the ice with the word ‘Love’ spelt out between them.

“Is it just me, or does this look like the thing I would never want to do?” said one viewer.

The ice floating season in Primorsky Krai, Russia, begins in December and runs until April, with a bay chosen by the team in Russky Island in the Sea of Japan, depending on the conditions.

“This entertainment is completely safe if you follow safety precautions, go through the briefing, prepare the right warm clothes for swimming, and always accompanied by an experienced instructor and certified lifeguards on the shore,” Ice Floating in Vladivostok told What’s The Jam.

“We are the first in the Far East to organise ice floating.

“Nowadays, this is a trendy activity that is gaining popularity in our region.

“In Vladivostok, we have beautiful ice, and we can not only swim in the water but also walk on the ice and jump into the water.

“This is a new variation of ice floating, which is more active and combines walking on ice and swimming in the cold sea.

“It is called ice walking.”
