Formerly bankrupt Boris Becker’s old tennis racquet for sale for £10,000

One of Boris Becker’s old tennis racquets is for sale for £10,000.

The former World Number One – who was declared bankrupt eight years ago – played with it in 1988.

It was at the height of his fame after he won Wimbledon for the first time three years earlier.

The three-time SW19 champ was jailed in 2022 for two-and-a-half years for hiding £2.5m worth of assets and loans to avoid paying debts.

The 57-year-old German – once worth an estimated £100m – used the Puma Super Four and Five Eighth midsize tennis racquet at the World Championship Tennis Finals.

It was at the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, US, where he beat Stefan Edberg, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Becker has signed the cover.

It was formerly exhibited at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, near New York.

The racquet is being sold at auction by Ewbank’s in Woking, Surrey.

The sale takes place on 12 November.

It was previously under the hammer with Wyles Hardy & Co. auction house, where they sold the personal items belonging to the tennis legend.

The guide price is between £7,000 and £10,000, as reported on What’s The Jam.

Also on offer is a trophy awarded to Becker on becoming Germany’s Junior Champion.

It is likely to attract bids of up to £2,500.

A signed German edition of Becker Advantage, the hardback book by Robert Lubenoff, comes with two signed Boris Becker photo cards.

The lot is tipped to sell for £2,000.

And a training warm-up suit worn by the champion, which was also on display at the Tennis Hall of Fame, Newport, Rhode Island, is expected to fetch £800.

Ewbank’s specialist, Tom Duggan, said: “Boris Becker is one of the great figures in the world of tennis.

And remains the youngest ever Wimbledon Men’s Singles champion, winning the tournament 40 years ago in 1985 as a qualifier at the age of just 17.

“With his extraordinarily strong serve, even then, he is credited with being the great pioneer of power tennis, and he still ranks among the top ten male singles players of the Open Era for winning percentages.”

Becker’s bankruptcy ended in May last year.
