An emotional son has recreated a childhood holiday photo on the very same seaside ride nearly 50 years later – in honour of his late dad.

Steve Dance donned a white T-shirt and pink trousers to match the outfit he wore as a five-year-old.

He then squeezed into the tiny traction engine at Westward Ho! in Devon, the exact spot of the original snap.

It was a touching tribute to his father, Barry, who died in March and had taken the original photo.

Steve, now 54, was joined by mum Marion and partner Amy on the nostalgic trip.

“A year or so ago I posted the photo of myself aged five on a traction engine ride outside the old amusement arcade,” Steve told What’s The Jam.

“That was on the bottom corner of the green at Westward Ho!

“Arcade owner Rob Braddick saw it and told me that he still had that actual ride in storage so we agreed to try and recreate the picture 50 years later.

“Someone pointed out that I should aim to match the fashion of pink trousers and questionable blue sandals.”

Steve, of Whittlesey, near Peterborough, Cambs added: “Well that image has been well and truly recreated.

“Despite the ride being more than a little battered around the edges I can confidently say it’s worn considerably better than I have.

“A big thanks to Rob Braddick – he was an absolute legend for recognising the ride and then going to the trouble.

“My mum genuinely loved it.

“I’m just gutted my dad wasn’t still around to see it.

“It was emotional having recently lost him. He loved Westward Ho! – we all do.”

Arcade and holiday park owner Mr Braddick added: “It was great fun to recapture the photo in the same kiddie ride.

“And wearing the same fashion too.”
