He hired a car for £30 and drove just over an hour to Lake Como.
The dad-of-five crammed in a boat trip on the lake and watched the sunset while enjoying a pizza and mocktail.

Chris spent £180 altogether.
“It’s amazing to be able to see somewhere completely different,” Chris, from Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, told What’s the Jam.
“It takes you out of your daily routine, you can be back in work the next day and it doesn’t cost you loads”

“Part of the attraction was that it’s expensive to take the whole family away.

“It can cost you that much just to go to London for the day.
“I wanted to go somewhere pretty that I’d never been to before and the kids wouldn’t be bothered about.

“There is a bit of time pressure because I needed everything to run smoothly.

“It was spectacular, the boat was an adventure and I ate dinner while watching the sunset.
“There was amazing scenery and good food.”
Chris arrived home at 2am, in time for work at 6am.

Airport parking set him back £26 and he spent £9 on a toastie and coffee at Stansted.
In Italy, his hire car cost £30 plus £8 worth of petrol and his wife gifted him the £100 boat trip for his birthday.
He splashed out £30 on pizza, a virgin cocktail, a lemon sponge cake and a coffee.
Chris – who took the trip on 25 March – also treated himself to a £3 gelato.
He said: “My advice to anyone wanting to see another country in a day is to plan in advance.
“You don’t want to spend time deciding what to do but its also worth being flexible in case anything goes wrong because flights can get delayed.”
