A geoscientist was left stumped by a bizarre fossil decoration on shelves at Marks and Spencer.

Saskia Elliott spotted the unusual object whilst checking out the Christmas decorations.

The ornament caught the attention of Saskia because of her profession.

According to the expert the decoration is an ammonite fossil, which are extinct marine animals that lived in the ocean millions of years ago.

The 27-year-old compared the ornament to her very own 152 million ammonite fossil from Dorset.

The only difference in the items is that the decoration had been covered in jewels to make it extra Christmassy.

Saskia Elliott, from Poole, Dorset, who posts her discoveries online said: “You’re telling me that Marks and Spencer’s thought this was a peak Christmas decoration?

“I mean I love it but what do you see?

“Because that is an ammonite it’s not even a nautilus.

“M&S for all your bedazzled ammonite needs.

“I love him. I also propose that excess stock goes to local schools, museums or your friendly neighbourhood geologists/palaeontologists.

“I have regrets that I didn’t buy a set of four at least now.”

She told What’s The Jam she spotted it in the M&S outlet at Clarks Village, in Street, Somerset, south of Bristol.

Shannon added: “As someone who exclusively decorates their tree with dinosaur ornaments, I think this is a peak decoration.”
