The disaster was caused by unrelenting storms that led to the overflowing of nearby river basins.

Floodwater swept away many homes, businesses and vehicles, and much of the region was left blanketed in mud and debris.

Emergency workers have so far recovered 219 dead bodies while a search continues for 93 missing people, as reported by What’s The Jam.

The ‘Dana’ disaster has affected over 70 localities in eastern Spain, with most of the damage occurring in southern Valencia.

Mirenchu del Valle Schaan, president of Spain’s Association of Insurance Companies, said: “We can estimate that we are facing the biggest payout for a weather-related event that Spain has ever suffered.”
