A mum-of-three was airlifted to safety after breaking her leg on Mount Snowdon.

Amanda Potter was hiking the Welsh mountain on October 6 to celebrate her daughter Megan’s birthday.

But the walk took a dramatic turn when 53-year old-Amanda slipped on a rock and broke her leg in two places.

Megan, 28, called 999 who contacted mountain rescue and they sent a helicopter to pick them up.

“It was my birthday present from my mum,” Megan, from Chelmsford, Essex, told What’s the Jam.

“We did a trail that was one of the harder ones but we researched it before.

“It was really wet and windy that day. It was slippery.

“Beginners shouldn’t do it in those weather conditions. It isn’t safe.

“She slipped on a rock and broke her leg in two places.

“I was really worried about how we would get down.

“There’s no way I would have been able to carry her.”

Megan said her mum is “the strongest woman” she knows and even went into “mum mode” while injured.

Megan said: “She tried to downplay it in front of me.

“Her leg was wobbling about but she tried to hide it from me because she didn’t want to freak me out.

“We were only one hour in but we were lucky because we weren’t above the clouds and we had phone signal.

“Mountain rescue had to jump out of bed. They’re all volunteers.

“From the moment we called, it was about half an hour until they picked us up but it felt like ages.”

A passerby set up a wind and rain shelter for the pair and kept Amanda’s foot straight so the circulation wasn’t cut off.

Megan said: “I was really worried because we were getting wet and I wanted to keep mum’s leg warm.

“People helped us. A tour guide taking people up had done some mountain rescue training and he’d brought a wind and rain shelter so we stayed in that.

“I was reassured because I knew we could stay in that until help came.

“He had to keep the foot straight to keep the circulation flowing but that obviously was more painful for her.

“She was just worried about me.”

That morning, Amanda had downloaded What3Words, an app that is designed to identify any Location on earth, meaning that the rescue team were able to locate them quickly.

Megan said: “There’s a mountain rescue app that hikers should know about which means they can get to you even faster.

“Mum had downloaded What3Words that morning and we ended up using it.

“That’s how they found us. It’s really important.”

Ten other volunteers climbed the mountain with a stretcher in case Amanda needed to be carried down.

Megan said: “I had a 10-person escort back down the mountain.

“They did their best to reassure me. I just wanted to get to the bottom and get to my mum.

“It’s hard reliving the moment but there’s a silver lining if we can raise some money for them.

“It’s amazing what the mountain rescue team did.

“I really want to give a shout out to them.

“They said they do it all the time and they’d rescued four people the day before.

“I’d love to raise some more money for them.”
