A fisherman had some-fin to shout about after planting a kiss on the cousin of a Great White Shark off the British coast.

Jonathan Paczkowski got up close and personal after catching it during an angling trip.

The porbeagle shark, weighing around 250Ibs, was one of several he caught, including one weighing around 350Ibs.

He and some friends from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, spent two days on an expedition off Ilfracombe, Devon.

“It’s not every day you get to kiss a shark,” he told What’s The Jam.

“Each took around 30 minutes to an hour to reel in.

“It was like hooking a car.

“We landed 17 up to the weight of 350lbs in two days.

“It was the trip of a lifetime.

“On an average two-day trip they catch one to two sharks.

“We caught 17 and lost another ten.”

He added that each shark was safely released afterwards.

The porbeagle shark is a member of the shark family Lamnidae, making it one of the closest living relatives of the Great White Shark.

It is usually found in deeper water where it hunts a variety of smaller fish including mackerel, whiting and herring as well as octopus, squid and cuttlefish.

They are strong swimmers and tagging studies have shown that they can travel huge distances.

One porbeagle shark tagged in Irish waters was later found as far away as Newfoundland in Canada.

They are endothermic which means they can maintain a higher body temperature and keep themselves warmer than the surrounding water.

This is a big advantage for them as it allows them to live and hunt in colder seas than many other sharks.
