Celebrity chef Paul Hollywood has sent left Bake Off fans shocked after claiming an iconic British cake “doesn’t exist”.

The 58-year-old, best known for his work as a judge on the Great British Bake Off, come under fire after his statement sent shockwaves through the cake-loving nation.

What was Paul’s crime? He said the iconic Victoria Sponge is actually a sandwich.

The strawberry jam-filled dessert has been a staple for celebratory food and sweet treats for many years and is loved by royals such as The Duchess of Cornwall.

However, the nation is divided on what the item’s actual name is, with many Brits referring to it as a Victoria Sponge or a Victoria Sandwich.

The split has now come back into the limelight after baking icon Paul nailed his flag to the sandwich post.

The chef from Wallasey stated that Mary Berry also referred to it as a sandwich, as reported by What’s The Jam.

Paul Hollywood said: “Victoria Sponge doesn’t exist.

“I’ve got no idea (why it’s been called that).

“I worked with Mary Berry for years, I heard her say Victoria Sandwich a lot.

“Prue (Leith) says Victoria Sandwich.

“That’s the name because it’s a sandwich.

“Victoria Sponge doesn’t exist, that’s a fact.”

Great British Bake Off fans have been left shocked by the chef’s recent comments.

One stated: “I would rather be locked in a tower than call this a sandwich.”

Jake added: “It’s a Victoria Sponge.”

Sereya said: “I’ve been calling it Victoria Sponge my whole life.”

Phoebe stated: “My whole childhood has been a lie.”

Taryn added: “My great grandma always called it a Victoria Sponge cake and she was born in 1914 and her mum baked for her family’s bakery.
