A woman says she is healthier than ever and financially far better off after ditching her vegan diet – in favour of the controversial ‘carnivore diet’.

Laura Sliazaite had dabbled with a strict diet of raw vegan food – largely consisting of uncooked vegetables and fruit – but struggled with high blood sugar levels and being unable to sleep properly.

The 39-year-old, from London, was “obsessive” about food and exercise, and suffered an array of issues including joint pain, low vitamin levels, bleeding gums and itchy skin.

After not touching meat for 13 years, Laura slowly introduced different food groups back into her diet, before deciding to commit to a carnivore diet for 30 days – to see once and for all if meat was the enemy.

While critics said she would “die from a heart attack” if she continued the extreme diet, Laura said the benefits have been endless – and has been eating exclusively meat, fish, eggs, cheese and fats for the past year.

“After the first of the 30 days, I started feeling so amazing, full of energy, and my digestion was better,” the IT professional told What’s The Jam.

“I decided to do 100 days, and by the time that had finished, I knew this was going to be my lifestyle.

“Now that it’s been more than a year, I can definitely say that for the first time, I’m feeling like a human being.

“I can see how my body has healed and is continuing to heal.”

Laura says she noticed incredible benefits.

She said her eczema, joint pain and inflammation had gone, the bleeding in her gums had stopped, and she noted positive changes to her mood and anxiety levels.

After first ditching veganism in 2014, she slowly introduced eggs and dairy products back into her system, before incorporating meat and fish too.

She said her sister had tried to convince her for around two years, seeing her struggling with her heavily restrictive vegan diet.

Laura said: “I understood that it was not making me healthy and I didn’t have enough energy.

“I couldn’t sacrifice my body any longer.”

She says she was suffering from insomnia as a result, “greyish” skin tone, and back pain.

Now, a typical day involves two meals – one loaded with eggs, bacon and cheese, and a dinner of steak and butter.

She says her choice has proved controversial, with not everyone understanding her reasoning.

Laura explained: “A lot of my colleagues were laughing at me at the beginning of my journey, where I was eating a lot of butter and a lot of meat.

“I get a lot of bad comments on Instagram saying I will soon be dead, I will clog my arteries, I will die from a heart attack, and that I’m ruining my digestion.”

But, for Laura, the lifestyle change has proved beneficial – with her mental and physical health better than ever.

She said: “I feel the carnivore diet changed something in my brain.

“My sleeping issues completely disappeared, so now I touch the pillow and I am out, and I wake up before my alarm – whereas before I would barely sleep three hours a night.

“I had eczema and body itchiness my entire life, sometimes so bad it felt like my body was on fire – this has disappeared.

“My body shape has improved – I didn’t really lose any weight but my inflammation went away.

“All my digestive issues like bloating, cramps and acid reflux have gone.

“My hair has never been more shiny, and even my eyesight has improved.

“My energy is always stable now – I don’t have the dips where I need a snack or get coffee.

“I used to get colds quite often and get cold sores on my lips, but haven’t had that for the last year – even with people around me and at work getting sick.”

Laura even says the diet has helped save her money – despite eating steak almost every day.

As a vegan, buying nuts, berries, and green she would spend an estimated £100 a week, but has cut that down by almost half.

She said: “Before starting the carnivore diet I thought it’s going to be quite expensive, but I spend way less money now.

“I do my grocery shopping once or twice a week and I get lots of steaks, lots of beef mince, organic eggs, some cheese and double cream for my coffee.

“I spend my food probably around £50 to £70 a week.”
