A new invention allows you to explore the world from the comfort of your own living room.

Only using VR headsets is so last year… in 2024, it’s all about the ‘treadmill shoes’.

The latest tech allows you to pair your headset with the motorised shoes, to quite literally ‘walk’ in a world of your making.

The product is currently being developed by the UK-US startup Freeaim, and the clever kicks are essentially little wearable treadmills, as reported by What’s The Jam.

While wearing the shoes, users will be to not only walk but turn, slow jog, fast walk, sidestep and crouch, as well as walk backwards.

However, fast running and jumping isn’t possible just yet.

The shoes have a grey base with blue padding, as well as straps and small wheels so that when the person walks, they should still be in the same spot.

Founders Alex Evans and Ashley Foxcroft, who launched the company in 2021, say you should also wear the swivel-castor frame that comes with the shoes.

The attachable structure is built to strap round your waist and is made to help you keep balanced.

The shoes work best on vinyl, as well as rigid floors and concrete.

Sadly, the shoes do not work on carpet – a common material in many British homes – so the company has recommended buying a floor matt if you don’t have any smooth surfaces.

According to Freeaim, the shoes are presently compatible with any VR headset supported by SteamVR, and will work with most PC-based VR games that have walkable environments.

Freeaim co-founder Alex Evans has said that a consumer model should be released next year at a price of about $1,000 (£770).
