A bearded woman has shared how she copes with her hairy chin during the summer months.

Khosi Nkanyezi Buthelezi has hit headlines in the past for embracing her beard, despite people staring, calling her names and advising her to shave.

While the 43-year-old loves herself the way she is, she says having a fluffy chin can require quite the maintenance routine during the hot weather season.

“The hair on any part of your body gathers heat and sweat, so that applies to my thick beard as well,” Khosi, a freelance book editor, told What’s The Jam.

“Unlike the hair on my head, I wash and moisturise my beard and then detangle knots twice a day.

“My grooming routine includes washing, trimming the length and hydrating.

“And using hydration instead of greasy products to help maintain both comfort and the ability to comb the beard during the warmer months.”

She says her beard requires “love and dedication”.

She said: “I doubt that the reactions from people differ because of the season; however, it could be influenced by my dress sense.

“Winter outfits includes beanies, polo necks and jackets, which offer more coverage and can obstruct people’s view of my chin.

“But summer means dresses and more feminine clothing that might look awkward accessorised with a beard.

“Beard care requires love and dedication.

“Some ladies focus on taking care of their hair, nails and skin.

“But a beard is a combination of hair and skin on a different part of your body.

“That should also look and feel soft and smell great.”

And to anyone in a similar position, Khosi advises to stay confident and to be yourself.

Khosi, from Johannesburg, South Africa, added: “Be comfortable and content with how you look, whether you remove all the hair, trim it short or let it grow out.

“I have embraced my look confidently.

“It boosts my self-confidence and provides a sense of identity.

“I learned that self-acceptance is a crucial aspect of self-care.

“It is the foundation for our confidence and self-esteem.

“I’ve had to remember that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms, and I am bringing body hair to the beauty equation.”
