A sprawling estate once belonging to the owner of Campbell’s Soup has gone on the market for an eye-watering $7.9m.

The Linden Estate dates back to 1931 and was designed by architect Edmund B. Gilchrist, famed for his French-Norman style designs.

Originally built for stockbroker, Rodman Ellison Griscom, in the 1950s the Dorrance Family – of John T. Dorrance, the Campbell Soup chemist responsible for the conception of condensing soup – purchased the property and it became home for the next four decades.

Brought up to date by the current owner to reflect modern living, the 14,467 sq ft estate, in Pennsylvania, US, has maintained completely the charm and spirit of the finest European manorial estates on which it was based.

The grand foyer entered through large double doors, sets the tone. The main floor is home to a formal living room and dining room adorned with hand-carved rosewood-panelled walls and English oak floors.

In addition, the primary kitchen with butler’s pantry, breakfast room, sunroom and the owner’s wing, which boasts a pale-green decorated library and fire for cosy family gatherings. A trophy room with a private full bath offers a flexible space that can be used as a bedroom, office or space to relax.

A sculptured sweeping staircase with modern ironwork leads to the main bedrooms, marble bathrooms with burnished brass fittings, and two further sitting areas displaying beautifully crafted millwork and carpentry each reached via wide, air-filled hallways.

The lower-ground floor does not feel at all like a basement, thanks to its high ceilings, and provides a recreational space for kids, a home gym, a half bath, an electrical room and abundant storage.

The outside is no less impressive with a tennis court and two saltwater swimming pools – the first is located adjacent to the owner’s wing, perfect for family use, and the second includes a pool house and is made for entertaining.

The estate also participates in a Pennsylvania state agricultural program that affords the owner tax savings and ensures the ongoing use of the land as a forestry preserve.

The Linden Estate is listed for auction with Interluxe at $7.95m (£6.37 million) and begins on 20 May 2024.
