The lorry driver overturned on the Pan-American Highway near the rural town of Rosas in south-western Colombia yesterday morning (30 September).
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the accident.
The vehicle ended up blocking the highway, which connects the Colombian departments of Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca.
Word spread that the lorry’s load was spilling onto the highway and hundreds of locals showed up to take full advantage.
Looters reportedly deactivated the vehicle’s security system to access the boxes of Corona, taking as much as they could.
One witness told local media: “Instead of going over to help the driver, people just showed up to steal the beer.”
The police said they have launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of the accident and identify as many suspected thieves as possible.
A video of the alleged looting spree has been viewed over 62,000 times on X, as reported by What’s The Jam.
One local commented: “No future for us, what a shame.”
Iris said: “They’re caught on film, prosecute them!”
Luis wrote: “This is the result of lack of education and rising poverty, it isn’t a problem with a certain community, it’s a problem of state abandonment.”
