Fancy exploring the south coast this summer while getting paid?

Now you can, with a “rare” job opportunity up for grabs.

The job is for a locomotive train diver but this isn’t your average rail.

The route, which runs from Lappa Valley near Newquay to Chacewater Branchline, carries in excess of 100,000 passengers per year.

Running solely off steam, diesel and battery electrics, these locomotives are one-of-a-kind.

But not everyone can apply – and there are strict requirements which need to be met.

According to the job listing, the company is looking for “a multi-skilled post holder who has prior railing fitting experience (preferably narrow gauge)”.

The chosen driver must be able to understand a broad variety of duties, such as maintaining the locomotives and rolling stock to a high-standard.

Being able to partake in the 15” gauge driving roster during the summer months (Easter – November) is also a must.

The position is full-time, permanent and a minimum of 40 hours a week, with a regular set pattern of Tuesday – Saturday, bank holidays included.

“Other than the fact that having been interested in railways from a very young age, I myself am extremely fortunate to be able to be able to come and live my dream of working with trains on a daily basis,” Ben Harding, operations manager, told What’s The Jam.

“I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has a similar interest in an environment where no two days are the same, and no two seasons are either.

“The variety is truly captivating.”

He added: “Jobs like this genuinely don’t come around very often.

“As well as driving regular services throughout the year, the successful applicant will also help maintain our fleet of 13 locomotives, 23 passenger carriages, various wagons and over 2.5 miles of railway.

“We’re a small and passionate team, and very lucky to be working with a variety of different locomotives.

“Although we are looking for someone with experience, we will be providing in-house training too.”

Lappa Valley, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year, has had a significant amount of investment over the past few years.

Apart from the new railway infrastructure and the introduction of a brand new £500,000 train – ‘City of Truro’ – there’s also a new soft play and café.
