Hundreds of surfers braved chilly waters in a bid to break the world record for the most people riding a single wave.

Around 300 people took to Great Western Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, for the spectacular attempt on Saturday (31 Oct).

The current mark of 110 was set at Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2009.

Surfers from across Europe flocked to the Cornish seaside town to take part in the Earthwave event, which was founded by Dene Botha.

Participants battled to get on the same wave.

Around 200 surfers had registered ahead of the event, including volunteers and invited participants, before numbers at the beach reached around 300.

But despite multiple attempts and huge crowds cheering them on, just 93 managed to ride the same wave – falling 17 short of the record.

Organisers said they were disappointed not to have beaten the record but vowed to return for another attempt, as reported by What’s The Jam.

A spokesperson for Earthwave said: “We might not have broken the world record, but what happened at Great Western Beach was something pretty special.”

Earthwave said it was already looking forward to having another crack at the record next year.
