A gold coin hoard from a bloody revolution worth over £373,000 has been discovered by archaeologists.

The ancient haul dates back over 100 years and was uncovered during a house construction.

A whopping 409 gold coins were dug up whilst a group of archaeologists were excavating a historic property.

The coins date back to as early as 1848 and are believed to be buried during the last days of the Russian Empire.

The discovery was made during an excavation of a historic house ahead of a new build in the city of Torzhok, Russia.

The revelation from the discovery made last year was confirmed on 5 March, as reported by Whats The Jam.

The haul was made up of 387 gold 10-ruble coins, 10 coins worth 5 rubles, 10 coins worth 14 rubles and two 7.5-ruble coins.

Due to inflation, the set of coins now have an estimated value of £373,000.

Whilst a few coins date back to 1848, the remainder are from the reign of Czar Nicholas II – the last emperor of Russia.

Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Nicholas and the rest of the royal Romanov family were executed in 1918.

Experts believe that the coins were hidden away at the start of the revolution with the owner intending to come back for them.

Documents from the area claim 24 families lived in the area during the 19th and 20th centuries – with no confirmation on who buried the coins.

The haul is now heading to the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum.

Archaeologists from the Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the All-Russian Historical and Ethnographic Museum completed the excavation.
