The Royal Family is looking for a housekeeper at one of its grandest residences who will earn just over minimum wage at £12.60 an hour.

A Housekeeping Assistant at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the King’s official residence in Scotland, is being recruited.

The role is part-time, offering 20 hours a week, with staff expected to work four days out of seven, including weekends, on flexible shift patterns from Monday to Sunday.

Despite the palace’s historic status, the wage is only marginally higher than the UK minimum wage, rising to £13.45 from April 2026, as reported by What’s the Jam.

The government website states that the national minimum wage for 21 year olds and over is £12.21.

For those 18 to 20, it’s £10 and for those under 18, it’s £7.55.

According to the advert, the successful candidate will help maintain the Edinburgh palace to immaculate standards, working across public rooms, bedrooms, facilities and behind-the-scenes areas.

Duties include cleaning, caring for historic interiors and furnishings, and handling valuable and delicate items.

The Royal Household describes the job as an opportunity to be part of a professional team delivering “exceptional results” in “incredible surroundings”.

The advert says: “It’s working as a team to achieve exceptional results.

“It’s being encouraged to gain new skills.

“This is what makes a career with the Royal Household so different.

“We’re looking for passionate, conscientious, and detail-focused individuals to join our Housekeeping team.”

Previous housekeeping or hospitality experience is said to be an advantage but not essential, with recruiters instead emphasising a proactive attitude, strong attention to detail and the ability to work well as part of a team.

Applicants must also be well organised, able to manage their time effectively and meet deadlines while maintaining the highest standards.

Two contracts are available – one permanent role and one 12-month fixed-term position – with candidates asked to specify their preference when applying.
