A fisherman has caught an ultra-rare blue lobster twice in just two weeks.

Marc Newton, 35, spotted the striking crustacean yesterday (9 June).

The 35-year-old, who runs fishmongers Beer Fisheries Ltd with his partner Leanne, saw his first one on 28 May.

The lobsters are electric blue due to a genetic abnormality that causes them to overproduce a certain protein.

An expert from Oxford University’s zoology department said the chance of catching a blue lobster was estimated at about one in two million, as reported by What’s The Jam.

“Here he is again,” Marc wrote in a social media post.

“On the left, we caught what looks like the same rare blue lobster as the other day.

“What do you think?

“Same or a different one?”

On 28 May, he shared a photo of a blue lobster and said: “The odds of catching a blue lobster are about one in two million.”

Marc, who caught the animal in Beer, East Devon, has deep roots in the local fishing community.

The family fishing boat, Bess, is skippered by his father Jim, who has been fishing since he could walk.

Marc said: “Our family has been supplying fresh local fish from our shop on Beer beach for the last 45 years.

“We’re now the fourth generation carrying on this tradition.”

Marc safely returned both lobsters to the sea.

Blue lobsters are famous for their striking cobalt colour, caused by a rare genetic mutation affecting their shell pigment.

People online were extremely interested in the post shared by Beer Fisheries Ltd.

Leanne said: “Reminds me of being little and catching a garfish at Beer and not believing the fisherman when he said it had green bones.”

Another fish shop said, “We had one last year. Freddie carried it in water, back to the sea from the shop and set it free.”

“Oh, interesting fact, as I found part of a blue one at Seaton Hole a few months back, I wondered if it was a rare find,” added Benny.

Kevin said, “Good for you, Jim.”

“Wow,” Abbie added.
