A woman has gone viral with 18 million views on TikTok after revealing the bizarre way she is helping cure her persistent cough this winter.
Amoreena Mcnally was struggling with a cough for over two months when she came across a rather unusual home remedy online.
The trick involves putting raw onions on your chest, and then putting a hot plastic bag on top.

Reportedly from the Amish community, the 36-year-old was desperate to give anything a try after weeks of sickness.
“I have been coughing since August so I searched on TikTok ‘home remedies for cough’ and I saw this and decided to give it a try,” Amoreena, a lab technologist from Michigan, US, told What’s The Jam.
“I had been to the doctors twice before trying home remedies because everything the doctors were giving me was not working.
“I was desperate for relief.”
In the video, Amoreena can be seen lying on her bed with thick slices of raw vegetables balanced on her chest.

She then places a heated-up Ziploc bag on top of them.
She says: “I might look silly, but I’m going to trust the Amish people.
“If you’ve had a cough that won’t go away, try this out.

“Because right now, I can breathe.”
Other people recommend putting the onions in a tea towel and heating it with a hot water bottle for ease.
Often called an onion poultice, it is believed to provide natural relief from deep coughs and chest congestion.
While the trick initially helped Amoreena, it didn’t have noticeable long-term effects – though her doctors later found a mass on her thymus gland which required further medical help.
The clip garnered thousands of likes and comments and started a debate in the comments section as to what the best home remedies are during wintertime.
One person commented: “I grew up Amish and this is how we take care of everything. The natural way.”
“I have an onion sliced in half beside my bed every night. Slice a fresh onion every couple of days and throw the old one out. Not sick in 2 years,” claimed another viewer.
Someone else added: “Cut onions and put them in your home. Don’t get rid of it till it’s dried up.”
Another user recommended she place the onions on her feet to “draw out infection”.
Amoreena added: “Naturally remedies can be amazing when there’s not something serious going on, so yes I would use this in the future for a chest cold.
“But if something’s lingering for a while you should definitely get checked out!”
