A copy of GoldenEye on the N64 has sold for over £3,000 at auction — more than 150 times the original price.

The cult, first-person shooter James Bond game was released for the Nintendo games console in 1997.

It was based on the 007 movie which came out two years earlier starring Pierce Brosnan as the fictional spy.

The four-player game was one of the most successful on the N64.

Eight million copies were sold worldwide and it helped the console take on the rival Sony PlayStation.

The unopened version that went under the hammer with auctioneers, Ewbank’s, was tipped to sell for just £200 to £400.

It was still in the factory-wrapped box and had never been played.

But it was bought for £3,120 — between 10 and 15 times the estimate on Tuesday (22 Oct).

The sale price was also 156 times the £20 retail price for the game 27 years ago, as reported on What’s The Jam.

A spokesperson for Ewbank’s, in Woking, Surrey, said: “It was a ground-breaking game released in 1997 inspired by James Bond that thrilled players.

“And eventually got banned in Germany.

“Now, a factory-sealed copy of Nintendo 64 GoldenEye has sold for nearly ten times its estimate for a premium-inclusive £3,120.

“The auction house has been the first in the UK to hold dedicated sales of retro video games and consoles, and this highlight shows the reason why.

“Several factors made Goldeneye 007 special.

“It was an early adopter of first-person shooters and helped lead the way in showing how games could have complex narratives and high levels of detail not seen before.

“Together with multiple levels of difficulty and a much more immersive virtual experience for the player, it was no surprise that it made such an impact.”

Specialist, James Spooner, said: “This is an outstanding game under any circumstances.

“But, to be able to offer a factory-sealed copy with the red strip Nintendo seal still in place, and in brand new condition with no notable damage, is a rare opportunity indeed.”
