The historic personal collection from Winston Churchill’s famous aunt is being sold.

The items belonging to Lady Sarah Wilson include photos of her young nephew, Winston, who would go on to become Britain’s wartime Prime Minister.

And also ‘off duty’ photos of King Edward VII and Germany’s, Kaiser Wilhelm.

Lady Sarah Wilson, born in 1865 at Blenheim Palace, was the daughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, sister to Lord Randolph Churchill, and aunt to Winston Churchill.

She married Gordon Wilson, a former Eton College student who helped thwart an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria in 1882 and later became aide-de-camp to Colonel Robert Baden Powell during the Boer War.

She was a close friend of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and members of both English and European royal families.

Despite her privileged position in society, Lady Sarah was determined to carve out her own path defying stereotypes of late Victorian society.

She became one of the first female war journalists reporting on the Siege of Mafeking as reported by What’s The Jam.

She made headlines herself when she was captured by the Boers and held prisoner, later being released in exchange for a horse thief held by Baden Powell.

Benjamin Lloyd, director of auctioneers, Mallams, said: “We are delighted to be offering this collection which originated in our home county of Oxfordshire and offers a unique insight into the life of a remarkable lady who clearly possessed the indomitable spirit we have all come to recognise from the Churchill name.”

The items will be auctioned at Mallams, Oxford, on January 30.
